How much life insurance do you need?

A tool and the logic: income years, debts, education expenses, and what you already have in place.

The standard approach is to total the years of income your family would need, add debts and education costs, and subtract what you already have saved or covered. This does not need to be exact: term policies come in round numbers, and your aim is an amount that would stabilize your household for the critical years.

Coverage estimate

$1,765,000

Formula: (income × years) + debts + education − existing coverage, rounded to the nearest $5,000. This is a beginning estimate, not professional guidance.

Why those inputs

Income years. Most professionals recommend ten to twenty years of income; your number hinges on how long dependents need help. A Lancaster family with young children typically opts for the longer span since housing, childcare, and education expenses overlap at peak.

Debts. A mortgage is typically the largest. Coverage sufficient to pay it off gives survivors the choice to stay without being pressured by monthly payments.

Education. An approximate allowance per child in present-day dollars. It is simpler to include now than to buy additional coverage later.

What you have. Savings available for emergencies and employer group coverage. Group coverage typically stops when you leave the job, so many count only a fraction of it.

Once you have a target amount, the quote tool displays pricing for 10 through 30 years from each carrier. Many buyers choose slightly higher coverage because the monthly cost difference is small when you are younger.
